Plant the 7- to 9-inch rhizome in mid-spring when the soil and air temperatures reach at least 60F. Space bulbs 2 feet apart and bury them 2 to 3 inches deep. In colder regions, lift bulbs in fall and store them in a cool, dry place with temperatures between 45F and 50F, ready for replanting in spring.
