How to Grow and Care for Amaryllis Bulbs

Planting Instructions

• Soil Mix: Use well-drained soil, such as one part well-rotted manure, one part horticultural grit or sand, and two parts leaf mold. Alternatively, a mix of two-thirds good compost with one-third grit works well.
• Planting Depth: Plant bulbs in a pot with drainage holes, keeping about one-third of the bulb above the soil surface.
• Sunlight: Place in a bright location with indirect sunlight. Amaryllis thrives in full sun.
• Temperature: Maintain a temperature of around 20C for optimal growth. Avoid extreme heat or cold.

Care and Maintenance

• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering to prevent bulb rot. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
• Fertilization: Apply an organic fertilizer regularly during the growing season to support healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
• Post-Flowering Care: After flowering, remove old flowers and trim the stem once it begins to sag. Continue watering and fertilizing for 5-6 months until the leaves yellow.
• Dormancy: Once leaves turn yellow, trim them to 2 inches above the bulb and store in a cool, dark place for at least 6 weeks before replanting. Avoid storing bulbs near apples, as they release ethylene gas that can harm the bulbs.
